Comments:
"Stay" is the second or third song Bryan Adams and I ever wrote, probably in January or February 1978. Quite simply, it was a verse of Bryan's combined with a chorus of mine ... and "presto" - we had a song.

Bryan recorded an excellent version of "Stay" for his first album -- it even had a beautiful string quartet arranged by Eric Robertson -- but for reasons that remain vague to this day, Bryan decided to leave the song off his album.

Several years later we offered "Stay" to my old group "Prism", who recorded it for their "Small Change" album. A French version of the song (titled "Tu N'as Pas Changé") was also recorded by Quebec recording artist Peter Pringle.
Lyrics: Feelings come and feelings go away
It happens everyday
We let it slip away

We could say goodnight or work it out some way
Or find the words to say
You don't have to stay

You don't have to stay forever
You don't have to stay at all
You won't have to wait a lifetime
You don't have to stay

So many times we tried to break away
But we were so afraid
We dreamed of yesterday

And of all the times you made me feel this way
You found the words to say
You don't have to stay

You don't have to stay forever
You don't have to stay at all
You won't have to wait a lifetime
You don't have to stay

(solo)

You don't have to stay forever
You don't have to stay at all
You won't have to wait a lifetime
You don't have to stay
