| Coal Hole Covers For centuries -- up until the mid 1950s -- London homes were heated with coal-fires. To avoid dirty, dusty bags of coal being carried through the house, in some neighborhoods coal was delivered via a "coal hole" into to a vault beneath the sidewalk. |
