In 2017 Bryan began planning a compilation album, his fourth after "So Far So Good" (1993), "The Best Of Me" (1999) and "Anthology" (2005). He decided to call the new package "Ultimate". To compliment the track-list he suggested we write a new song with the word "Ultimate" in the title (exactly the kind of challenge I like ... a project with a deadline).

As a possible starting point Bryan played me a recording he'd made with his band at a pre-concert sound-check somewhere, a frenetic Who-inspired track with aggressive guitar stabs and wild drum fills. It had great energy.

We wrote a lyric and melody and we called the new song "Ultimate Love".

Mission accomplished. Almost.

We "lived with it" for a month, but we ultimately decided (pun intended) to take a different approach. I had a rough track I'd recorded during the "Get Up" sessions a few years earlier. Bryan and I had a listen and we both agreed it had potential. So we wrote a new "Ultimate Love" lyric and melody to fit the new track. It seemed to work!

A few weeks later during a concert tour of Ireland, Bryan and his band set up in the dining room (?) of Ballyvolane House -- a country manor house originally built in 1728 and now operating as a hotel -- and recorded a rockin' track.

At this point we hoped that Jeff Lynne might take over, but he was too busy with his own projects. However, he and Steve Jay agree to mix the track.

Lyrics: Ain't no winners when you're dropping bombs
Why can't we all just get along?
I say "yeah"

We can make it happen, we can make it better
There's just one world we gotta live together
I say "yeah"

If I know one thing
We're all searching for something
We're all looking for love
The ultimate love

Too many people livin' on the street
Can't make the rent, can't make ends meet
I say "yeah"

Everybody wants a quick solution
Step right up and make a contribution
I say "yeah"

If I know one thing
We're all searching for something
We're all looking for love
The ultimate love

Now here's the main thing
We all want the same thing
We're all looking for love
The ultimate love

Flip a coin, peace or war
Seems the free world ain't so free no more
I say "yeah"

Just imagine how bad it could be
If you ain't scared, I think you should be
I say "yeah"

If I know one thing
We're all searching for something
We're all looking for love
The ultimate love

Now here's the main thing
We all want the same thing
We're all looking for love
The ultimate love

Looking for love, ultimate love
Looking for love, ultimate love
Ultimate love
