This song came together very slowly ... possibly the longest gestation of any song Bryan and I have written.

It was assembled in bits and pieces over a five-year period, not because it was difficult to write, but because we had trouble finding an arrangement that worked.

We tried a variety of instrumentations, beginning with a "Bob Dylan" approach: acoustic guitar, vocal, and a harmonica solo where the bridge section now resides. It was charming and intimate, but it wasn't quite right.

Then we tried a "band" approach: a combination of keyboards, upright bass and drums ... reminiscent of early Cat Stevens.  But that didn't gel either.

Our search for an arrangement was elusive and frustrating.  As a result, we kept setting the song aside.

We started writing the song in 2009 ... that's when we came up with the chorus (chords, melody and lyrics) along with a "sketch" of what would eventually be the verse (chords and melody, but no lyrics).

Lyrics for the verses were written a year later, in 2010. Then the song sat, neglected, for 2 or 3 years until producer David Foster heard it and decided it was worth recording.

In 2013 Bryan and David took "She Knows Me" into the studio in Los Angeles. Things came together quite quickly.

They were close to completing the recording when one day Bryan decided the song needed a "bridge" section (sometimes referred to as a "middle eight").

Bryan had a melody in mind, which he sang to me over the phone (I was in Toronto).  I suggested a few lines of lyric, and voila, we had a bridge! Bryan and David added the new section to the recording and the song was finished.  Almost.

Another month went by. One day Bryan decided to add a "whoa-whoa" vocal refrain. An excellent idea, in my opinion.

Finally, the song was finished.  Almost.

A few months later -- a day or two before the song was scheduled for mastering -- Bryan jettisoned most of the electric guitars in favour of an acoustic guitar.

This is the one change I wasn't sure about ... in fact, I still prefer the version with the electric guitars.  But at least the song was finally mixed, mastered and released to the public, nearly five years after we started writing it!
Lyrics: Winds will come and winds will go
And the seasons always change
But the light that shimmers in her eyes
Stays the same

Yeah, the sun will shine and the moon will glow
And the world will always turn
There's a constant fire inside of her
That always burns

She knows me
Every corner of my soul
She knows me
The way I come, the way I go
She told me
There's nothin' I can show
That she don't know about me

Round and round and round we go
Neither here or neither there
All I know, without her in my life
I'd be nowhere

Well, feelings come and feelings go
But some things never change
Like the light that shimmers in her eyes
It stays the same

Oh, she knows me
When I'm wrong or when I'm right
She knows me
In the middle of the night
She holds me
And I don't say a word
Cuz words could never save me

And I say

Woah, oh woah, oh woah
Woah, oh woah, oh woah
Woah, oh woah, oh woah, oh woah, oh woah
She knows me, yeah

She's got a permanent hold on my heart, yeah
And I'm learning to live with the loneliness
When we're apart

Every little way
She knows me
When there's nothin' left to say

She holds me
And time just flies away
Cuz bein' with her is so easy

Oh, she knows me
Every corner of my soul
She knows me
The way I come, the way I go
She told me
There's nothin' I can show
That she don't know about me

And I say

Woah, oh woah, oh woah
Woah, oh woah, oh woah
She knows me

Woah, oh-woah, oh-woah, oh-woah, oh-woah
She knows me, better than I know myself

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, she knows me
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, she knows me
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, she knows me
Yeah, yeah, yeah
