"One Night Love Affair" is a simple song that manages to be effective, however I think the song might have been completely ordinary were it not for the key change from verse to chorus. This "modulation" was inspired by the song "Working For The Weekend", written and recorded by our Vancouver friends Loverboy.

In reality, the modulation is an aural illusion.  Even though the chords move downwards at the end of each verse (B-G#m-F#-E-D) the result is an upward modulation from the key of B (verse) to the key of D (chorus) ... which gives the effect that the song's energy has moved up a notch.

Bryan and I recorded the demo for "One Night Love Affair" in my home studio in West Vancouver.  When we were finished, we invited guitarist Keith Scott to come by and play a solo. To give Keith a chuckle, just before he arrived we changed one line of lyric. In the second verse we'd originally written "If the night was made for love it ain't for keeps". Bryan re-sang that line: "If the night was made for love it ain't for Keith". The first time Keith heard the song he nearly fell on the floor laughing!

Of course, the original lyric appears on the final recorded version of the song, but when Bryan performs "One Night Love Affair" in concert, he always looks over at Keith during the second verse and sings the "Keith" lyric.
