Comments:
Bryan on "The David Letterman Show" with Tommy Mandell, Dave Taylor, Mickey Curry and Keith Scott.
"One Night Love Affair" is a simple song that manages to be effective. In fact, the song might have been completely ordinary if not for the "modulation" (key change) from verse to chorus.

In this case the modulation is an aural illusion. The verses are in the key of B, with the chords "descending" for the last two bars of each verse:

                 B / G#min / F# / E

In fact, the chords descend one step further, from E (the last chord of the verse) to D (the first chord of the chorus).  It's a downward chord movement, however the perceived result is an upward modulation, giving the song an extra kick of energy going into the chorus.

Bryan and I recorded the demo for "One Night Love Affair" in my home studio one night in September 1983. When we finished the track we invited guitarist Keith Scott to come by and play a solo. To give Keith a chuckle we changed one line of lyric. In the second verse we'd originally written "If the night was made for love it ain't for keeps". Bryan re-sang it: "If the night was made for love it ain't for Keith". When Keith heard it for the first time, he nearly fell on the floor laughing!

Of course, the original lyric ("keeps") appears on the final recorded version of the song, but sometimes, when Bryan performs "One Night Love Affair" in concert, he looks over at Keith during the second verse and sings the "Keith" lyric.

Lyrics:
  Bryan's brilliant guitarist
Keith Scott
You're the silent type
And you caught my eye
But I never thought that I'd be touchin' you

How was I to know
I'd let my feelin's go
And that I'd be yours before the night was through - ya

One night love affair
Tryin' to make like we don't care
We were both reachin' out for somethin' - oh

One night love affair
Pretendin' it ain't there
Oh - and now we're left with nothin'

When the mornin' breaks
We go our separate ways
If the night was made for love it ain't for keeps

But I lose control
As I watch you go
All my senses say I'm in this much too deep
Now you're outta reach . . .

One night love affair
Tryin' to make like we don't care
We were both reachin' out for somethin' - ya, ya

One night love affair
Pretendin' we don't care
Oh - and now we're left with nothin' - hey

Solo

One night love affair
Tryin' to make like we don't care
We were both reachin' out for somethin' - ya, ya

One night love affair
Sometimes life ain't fair
Oh - and now we're left with nothin', nothin' - ya, ya

Oh night, one night, one night, one night
One night, one night love affair - ya
