Bryan and I wrote "Don't Ya Say It" in my room at the Hampton
Court Hotel in Toronto in August '79 (I was producing the group Cano at
the time). The song appeared on Bryan's first album, released in 1980. Stylistically the song is a left-over from Bryan's short-lived disco career. His first single Let Me Take You Dancing spent a few weeks on the U.S. dance charts in the Spring of 1979. One of the highlights of recording Bryan's first album was Gene Meros' sax solo on "Don't Ya Say It". Gene was mix-engineer Bob Schaper's assistant. Bob said, "You know, Gene plays a pretty mean sax". We didn't quite believe him until Gene pulled out his horn and started to blow. He nailed the solo in one take! Fred Turner (Bachman-Turner Overdrive) contributed backing vocals on the choruses, which we recorded at Pinewood Studios in Vancouver on December 1, 1979. |
